“The Sky Is Falling” – Why Most SEO’s Freak Out When Algorithm Updates Hit

The internet is ever-evolving, and this should not be breaking news to anyone. Updates, AI, and constant change keep most SEOs on their toes. One thing I’ve tried to teach myself and my clients over the years is that core algorithm updates happen, and these days, they happen more often than ever before.

Search Engine Optimization and Web Design in Kansas City

As content becomes more accessible and easier to create, thanks in part to artificial intelligence sources like Chat GPT, Gemini, and countless others, search engines have been adjusting how and what ranks well due to the tsunami of published content. While most beginner SEOs genuinely aren’t capable of publishing good, quality content with a simple AI prompt, the fact that so many websites are pumping out garbage content makes search engines like Google have to make adjustments. Like the “helpful content” algorithm update, search engines are slowly but surely catching on to content solely designed to help a website rank higher organically but provide little to no informational value to the reader.

As a rule of thumb, when organic search rankings get volatile, it’s sure that a big core algorithm update is on its way, as I have seen in the past few weeks. The trick with SEO is that if you’re not ahead of what’s coming, you end up scrambling to try to “fix” what Google, Bing, or other search engines ding your site(s) for. That’s never a good idea because it usually involves a complete content makeover, which is not only time-consuming but also a waste of time and resources when it should have been right the first time. At Web Force KC, we don’t “freak out” anymore when rankings fluctuate because we know that the content we publish for our clients is solid, timely, relevant, and informative as it pertains to whatever industry they are in. I guess the point of this blog is that keyword-jamming a ton of blog posts with AI isn’t a viable option anymore, nor is it an effective marketing strategy. Of course, I use AI to help with tasks that would otherwise take a ton of time, but publishing trash content just to rank for a few low-value keywords is not part of Web Force KC’s game plan.

    Until next time. 🍻

  • Smoke and Vape Shop SEO and Online Marketing: Tons Of Fun, But Not Easy!

Smoke and Vape Shop SEO and Online Marketing: Tons Of Fun, But Not Easy!

When I started Web Force KC over 12 years ago, I knew it would not be a typical ad/marketing agency. For years, I had worked for agencies that always seemed to overlook thriving industries because the nature of their businesses was considered taboo or high-risk. Smoke, tobacco, and vape shops were an industry that I had followed since I was in high school because, well, it was part of my culture. While smoke shops (or head shops) have been around since the 1960s, the industry’s explosive growth can be seen on almost every corner of every city and suburb, including here in Kansas City.

Smoke and Vape Shop Search Engine Optimization, Web Design, and Online Marketing

So why would Web Force KC want to get into smoke and vape shop marketing? Well, for one thing, it’s FUN! That’s not to say I don’t enjoy creating content for my other clients’ industries. Still, if you can imagine waking up every day and knocking out blog content and social media posts about vapes, bongs, rolling papers, and other smoking/vaping supplies coupled with local sports, holidays, weather, events, or whatever while getting paid for it, and more importantly, soundly dominating any market we are hired to promote shops in, it’s pretty damn fun.

The thing is that it is by no means easy. Smoke and vape shops have always had an interestingly restrictive place in online marketing and social networks; not knowing the rules of engagement can land an agency in big trouble. While the US continues to lower its guard on things like cannabis, some social media platforms will suspend or ban users for violating community guidelines. This means that if they deem a post to be about drugs (THC/CBD/kratom, etc.) or promoting tobacco (cigarettes, chewing tobacco), they will take action. (Trust me, I’ve been in Meta jail countless times). Plus, most, if not all, of the top social media platforms won’t allow smoke/vape shops to use paid advertising (or boost) for content. If that’s not enough, Google and other search engines won’t allow PPC campaigns for smoke/vape shops, leaving SEO and organic content marketing the only viable choice for success. Yelp does allow smoke/vape shops to do paid advertising, but based on my experience, the results are lackluster at best for the amount of money you’ll spend.

So, how does an agency effectively market a smoke/vape shop in a hyper-competitive market? Well, it mostly has to do with creating solid, consistent content and having a firm understanding of what the ultimate call-to-action(s) is. Obviously, “get directions‘ is number one, but getting phone calls is a close second because that’s when the stores’ staff sales skills have to kick in. Thinking local and staying on top of what’s happening is a significant component of creating compelling content. We’ve learned from experience that not knowing what’s going on in the metro can directly affect sales volume on any given day.

A prime example is when football starts in the fall. Here in KC, it’s a must-watch TV unless, of course, you’re at Arrowhead. Making sure that the smoke/vape shops get EARLY social media posts and content published is crucial because foot traffic dies in every shop after kickoff, tipoff, or, in some cases, the first pitch. The same is true in the Dallas-Fort Worth market when the Cowboys play, which seems odd because they are never very good (sorry, not sorry).

Without giving out any secrets, the truth is that no marketing campaign is “easy,” but many standard online marketing tools are limited or non-existent in the case of smoke and vape shops. It takes solid, consistent content with clear and easy-to-access calls to action because no one walks through your doors if you don’t show up in a given search.

    Until next time. 🍻

  • Same Concept, Different Blog

    Same Concept, Different Blog

Content marketing can be tough especially when the business you’re writing for doesn’t really change that much. However, I’ve learned to find ways around getting into a writer’s slump primarily by realizing and accepting that no matter how much you’ve written about a given subject, product, or service, there is always more that you can do but it doesn’t always come easy.

SEO and Content Marketing in Kansas City, MO

I write a TON of content for my clients and it’s really easy to get burned out but thankfully I’m never really short on ideas (most good, some not so good.) As I’ve acquired more clients and my older clients have grown, I’ve had to find new ways to market them and, honestly, some weeks it goes as smooth as silk and others it’s like pulling teeth. Look at it this way: for one of my oldest clients, I have written and published over 1,800 blog posts and hundreds of website pages and while their business never really changes much with the exception of adding new products to their retail store, the content I write on their behalf has to be ever changing, unique, engaging and relevant in order for it to be effective. Sure some content is better than others but the key has been to be consistent with regularly publishing blog posts and making adjustments to the overall page structure of their website(s) when necessary for all of my clients to help them grow their businesses.

A few weeks back, I was in burn out mode and started thinking about examples in my life and the world I observe of how individuals are able to take the same concept(s) and re-imagine them over and over again without getting sick and tired of doing it. At the time, I was getting back into old school Metallica and I thought, “Boy, they must be so over playing the song ‘One’ at every single show for weeks and months at a time.” The thing is that ‘One’ (one of my least favorite Metallica songs) was a massive hit and there are likely fans in the audience every night they play that are only there to hear that one (no pun unintended) song. Having seen Metallica live (among other metal bands) many times over the years, I noticed they always find ways to change things up a little bit in their biggest songs but overall the singalongs and melody remains constant which is cool for the audience but probably also good for the band that has played these songs hundreds if not thousands of times. It made me realize that even though I may feel like I’m writing about the same products and services for my clients over and over again, I have to find new and innovative ways to change it up for my audience as well as for myself so I don’t go insane or get severely burned out. It’s not that there won’t be days when I’m just not feeling it and the words don’t flow like a river but realizing that this is the way that artists, marketers, and people that are just good at what they do have to make changes and adjustments to keep their audiences’ and their own interest focused. Content marketing probably isn’t as cool as a Metallica song but it felt good to connect the two and whatever makes me think, makes me better at what I do. That’s what Web Force KC does (for itself and) for our clients.

  • Content Marketing Kicks Ass

    Content Marketing Kicks Ass

Photo by Kaitlyn Baker on Unsplash

I’ve always loved writing. I can’t remember the actual moment when I realized that writing came naturally to me but I know it was when I was very young. As a teenager I wrote a ton of poetry and other odd literary project most of which was real hit and miss but nevertheless writing was and continues to be a creative outlet that has not only gotten me through some pretty rough times, it has quite honestly kept me sane (still does). I’m lucky enough to get paid to write for my clients and I don’t take that responsibility and privilege lightly. Through my content writing on their websites, blogs, social media, and other marketing projects, I get to literally become the online voice of that business which is enormously fun but can often times be very difficult.

Search Engine Optimization and Content Marketing in Kansas City, MO

Writing for a business is content marketing and the best part about it (at least for me) is that I’m rarely at a loss for words or ideas. The trick to effective content writing is finding new ways to describe the same products or services over and over again in new ways that are relevant to my clients, their customers, and ultimately the search engines which is why they pay me to write in the first place. Looking back at some of my early content marketing work, it was pretty evident that the rules of the search engines weren’t very strict like they are today. In fact, I remember writing blog posts that were so absurdly overly keyword heavy that any normal person reading it would think a lunatic wrote it. That may have worked then but it certainly doesn’t work now in 2020.

Photo by Skye Studios on Unsplash

Rich, unique content is what Google says they want to see and these days when you lay the keyword babble on too heavy, you’ll likely get penalized and loose rankings. This means that there must be a balance between relevant content that is unique, current, and most importantly makes sense to both potential customers reading it as well as the search engines in order to be effective. It sounds more complicated than it really is but it does take some practice to get content to consistently flow and at the same time be functional for online marketing goals. Integrating what’s currently going on is an easy way to create content that is engaging and relevant but there are some really deep pitfalls you’ll probably want to avoid if you go that route. For example, leaning one way politically with your business’ voice will inevitably cut off any potential customers that are on the opposite end of the political spectrum of you which isn’t good. A good rule of thumb I use when I’m debating whether to use an outside current event or mindset in content is to ask myself “is there a large group that are vehemently opposed to this?” If the answer is yes or even maybe, I don’t do it. Don’t get me wrong, I could care less if someone gets offended by my personal opinions but they have no place in my business communications or my clients’ content for that matter.

    web-design-content-marketing-SEO-Kansas-City-MO
Photo by hannah grace on Unsplash

I guess the best advise I can give on content marketing is just keep typing no matter what (you can always go back and edit later), keep the content upbeat, and keep it current and relevant to where you are and what’s going on there. Don’t try to explain your whole business in one content piece but instead try breaking up parts of what you do or what you sell into separate content. Don’t expect all of your content to make you surge up in the search engine rankings because you’ll be very disappointed. Obviously some content will be more productive and effective than others and the key is to maximize those that really kick ass and learn why they performed so well so that you can take your future content to the next level.

When I first started in the SEO/online marketing industry the phrase “Content is King” could be heard in pretty much every sales pitch or presentation to new clients and it still holds true today. Sure you can go and pay Google a mountain of money to show up prominently and  immediately with AdWords but the fact is that once you stop paying, you immediately become invisible again. With content marketing and search engine optimization, your online presence is built organically which, in my opinion, is much more powerful, effective and lasting. Especially when you consider that most Pay Per Click ads only see a roughly 2% click through rate which isn’t much for what you pay. Content marketing works exceptionally well but it is by no means the most simple and easy path to succeed online. However, when done correctly, content marketing can be the most powerful and effective tool in your online marketing arsenal and that is why I enjoy it so much.

  • The Rise, Fall, and Rise Again Of QR Codes

    web-design-SEO-online-marketing-in-Kansas-City-MO

I’ve been a big fan of using QR codes in marketing strategies for many years. Ever since the smartphone became something that nearly everyone had in their pocket, the QR code has been a pretty nifty bridge to take you from the physical world as we know it to the magical land of the internet simply by pointing your phone at the black and white blocked squares. If memory serves me correct, the first REAL phone I owned was the G1 which was one of, if not the first phone to run Android by Google. The G1 amazingly enough had an app for scanning QR codes. At the time it was absolutely astounding to scan codes but there weren’t many ways to actually generate QR codes efficiently or free for that matter. Now you can spot QR codes on everything from Heinz Ketchup bottles and TV commercials to the trailer of a remodeling company and the invoices they send to their customers which should scream to you that they still work. In fact, today’s smartphones make it easier than ever to scan a QR code because all you need to do is open your phone’s camera and point whereas previously you needed an app that was almost always ad sponsored to scan.

Local Web Design and Online Marketing in Kansas City, MO

What’s interesting about QR codes is that they aren’t necessarily a new thing. In fact, they’ve been around for many years before the advent of smartphones or the widespread use of the internet as we know it today. QR codes are essentially bar codes but they are read quite differently and are capable of storing much more information. The first bar codes were developed in the 1960s in Japan where the country was experiencing huge economic growth, especially in retail industries. Grocery store cashiers, at the time, had to hand key in prices and products which is not only inefficient but it was also exhausting. Once in use, the bar code revolutionized product pricing, inventory management, and global commerce as we know it. However, the bar code was soon found to have limitations most specifically in the amount of information that could be stored with an individual code. A typical bar code could only store around 20 alphanumeric characters of information which isn’t a whole lot. Plus, a bar code can only be read in one direction (left to right) with a singular scanner device (today’s bar code scanners have since fixed this with more advanced scanning techniques). That’s where Denso Wave Incorporated enters the picture as they were already developing more advanced code reading capabilities that could store much more information than a simple bar code. The QR code they were developing could be scanned unidirectional meaning no matter which way it’s facing or which angle you’re scanning from, it can easily and flawlessly be read. As expected, it took many years and a ton of trial and error before it worked seamlessly. Fast forward to 1994 when the Denso Corporation finally released the QR code as we know it to the public in Japan which prompted the Japanese automobile industry to quickly integrate the codes into auto parts and production processes. They were immensely popular (mostly in Japan) but they soon faded away from the public eye until around 2002 when the explosion of smartphones allowed everyone to have a scanner in the palm of their hand. As everyone on the planet began to get their hands on every increasingly powerful smartphone devices, the use of the QR code rose as well. QR codes have been used on everything from coupons and security badges to airline boarding passes and so much more (just look around and you’ll likely find a QR code on something near you). QR codes seemed to disappear for a number of years especially for public use and applications but with the most recent smartphones equipped with a code scanner in their camera app, they have seen a huge resurgence. While you would think that inventing something as useful and globally used as the QR code would make the inventor insanely rich, the creator did in fact patent the code but opted to allow public use without restriction.

Today it’s pretty simple to create a custom QR code for businesses or for whatever. At Web Force KC, we use them to help our clients get better customer reviews, direct their customers to non-public pages on their websites, add to their social media presence, promote sales, and many more applications and functions that are easily accessible to anyone with a smartphone. We strive to find new and creative ways to use QR codes for our clients to help them grow their businesses.

If you enjoyed reading this blog, do us a favor and pull out your smartphone, open up your camera, point it at the QR code below, follow the link, and write a review for Web Force KC. We would appreciate it!

  • Why You Should Blog About Your Business

Blogging For Businesses In Kansas City

Web Force KC helps small businesses in Kansas City and surrounding areas develop solid and consistent online marketing strategies that are results driven and effective. One of the main ways we help the businesses we partner with is by blogging on behalf of their business. We typically are not using the blog to make social commentary, rant & rave, or create a social buzz. In fact most of the time our blogging is a direct assault on keywords and sets of keywords that generate traffic to websites that can then convert into potential customers for the businesses we work for. There is much more to it than just dropping a ton of keywords onto a blog and blasting it out onto the internet and we thought we would share some of the things we at Web Force do in blogs for the businesses we work with.

Using Effective Titles In Your Blog

Whether your business is seasonal or not, there is always something you could talking about for your business online. Web Force KC researchesweb-design-search-engine-optimization-Kansas-City-Lees-Summit what keyword(s) or keyword phrases are the most relevant to your business online and then we find ways to incorporate them into blog titles, page titles, and content with the blogs. The trick is to not duplicate the content while still utilizing the target keywords and keyword phrases which can be difficult which is never easy. As targeted keyword campaigns become more successful and effective, Web Force KC will broaden the keyword spectrum to include other relevant keywords to the business that are an expansion to the keyword sets that are the foundation of the campaign.  Using primary target keywords in blog titles along with location based verbiage usually makes the for the most effective blog titles that yield the best traffic but the curtains need to match the drapes in the content, categories, tags, H1, H2 H3 etc.

  • Consistency Counts In Your Online Marketing Efforts

Web Design & Search Engine Optimization In Kansas City

Just because you have a website and have claimed all of your online business directories doesn’t mean that you will have a flurry of potential customers visiting your website. As your website ages and content is not added to your site (blogging, additional pages, etc), it will more than likely begin to fall in search engine rank. If left alone over an extended period of time, your website will likely fall beneath your competitors websites on the search engine leaving your business with little to no website traffic and little to no online conversions from your website.

Adding Constant Content To Your Website In Kansas City Works!

    web-design-Kansas-City-search-engine-optimization-Lees-Summit
    Is Your Web Design Effective?

Assuming your business’ website has a blog and social media, you have an online avenue to continually add content to your business’ online presence. Structured and effective blog writing can take anywhere from 1 hour to several hours to write, categorize, tag, title, describe and finally add SEO keywords to your blog.  Using H1, H2, H3, etc tags within your content will help the search engines determine what your blog (and your website) is about and where it should show up as it pertains to a given search.  Assuming your blog is written and structured correctly, the search engines may add your blog post (as opposed to a specific web page on your website) to the search engine results creating an effective entry point into your website.  Continually thinking of blog topic ideas is where it tends to get difficult and Web Force KC are experts at creating relevant, effective blog posts and ideas that put your business into the search engine results for your product or industry in your area. Regardless of whether your business is focusing on attracting potential customers locally or nationally, adding relevant content constantly is an absolute must.

The problem with most web design is that web designers are typically not search engine optimization specialists and if your website was designed in such a way that it is not an effective website in Kansas City, Web Force KC would like to help you. Web Force KC does not keep our online marketing strategies and procedures a secret from our customers because we want them to understand what we are doing for their business, why we are doing it and how it helps their business grow.

  • Give Your Website An Engine

Web Design & Search Engine Optimization In Kansas City & Lees Summit

Your business website could be the best looking website in your industry but if your potential customers are not able to find it, your website is more like the body of a car without an engine. Making your website prominent and relevant on the search engines and to your potential customers takes more than just building a website and expecting people to be able to find it.  At Web Force KC, we not only design websites that are clean and effective at converting visitors, but we also help with creating marketing campaigns to make your website visible in any and every industry scenario your business serves.

    Making Your Website Effective

Making your website effective is not simple but not rocket science either. When your website is build from its framework up on principles that not only make sense to the search engines but also to your potential customers, it will begin to become effective. The more content that you put into your website’s pages and blog, the more the search engines will index through it. There are basic things that are needed for the search engines to determine what to “file your website under.” Adding content often makes it more relevant to whatever industry you are involved in assuming that your website has content including strategically chosen keyword(s) that could be and are searched by your potential customers. Web Force KC does all of this and more for your business to ensure that your business’ website is seen on the search engines and grows.

  • Blog Posts Are Extra Pages For Your Website

Web Design & Search Engine Optimization In Kansas City, Overland Park & Lees Summit

At Web Force KC, we write numerous blogs each week on behalf of the businesses we partner with in Kansas City. Because most of the businesses we perform search engine optimization services for rarely change their product/services change, (with the exception of maybe fluctuating inventory) their websites and pages do not change much in regards to content once the website, page titles, menus structure, and back-end of the pages of the website have been optimized appropriately.  Blogging for businesses in Kansas City by Web Force KC allows for businesses focus their online marketing efforts on specific services or products in specific areas geographically.

Using Blog Posts To Promote Seasonal Products & Services In Kansas City

Kansas City has every weather extreme imaginable, and it can affect the search volume online and website traffic for certain products & services for the businesses we at Web Force KC partner with. For example, our marketing partner SK Lawn Care has an abundance of seasonality in the services they focus on.  In the spring and summer, SK Lawn Care will typically focus on fertilization treatments, lawn mowing and landscaping because the weather is favorable and the online search volume in the Kansas City area will skyrocket with commercial and residential inquiries for quote/bids on lawn care in the midst of the season. In the fall, however, businesses and homeowners will be online searching for leaf removal or fall seeding, and if Web Force KC has not prepared in advance, we can make sure our marketing partners appear prominently on the search engines. The task of making sure businesses that offer seasonal products or services online attract traffic to their website so that they can convert the traffic into new business is tricky and is always something we have to plan ahead for.

Planning Ahead With Search Engine Optimization for Seasonal Businesses In Kansas City

First of all, search engine optimization is not something that occurs overnight, ever. The process is seemingly slow and methodical, requiring endless amounts of creativity to explore a specific product or service a business offers over and over again.  The process of blogging repeatedly about a seasonal product or service takes creativity, pre-planning, and constant analysis to determine what is working well to convert online searchers into website visitors and then into potential customers.  Depending on how competitive your industry is, using blogging to tap into search engine optimization may take months to yield phenomenal results.

Web Force KC uses blogging and adding constant content to your website as just one way to help grow your business online.  There are many other factors involved in simply writing an effective blog, and Web Force KC constantly looks for new ways to increase and refine traffic to your website and increase website conversions as well.

  • Is Your Business Synonymous With Your Industry Online?

Search Engine Optimization Marketing In Kansas City

Take a moment and do a Google, Yahoo or Bing search for what your business does without using your business’ name. Does your business show up on the first, second or third page in the search results? How many pages of search results do you have to go through until you find your business online? If you cannot find your business by searching for what you do in your area then your online presence could use some help and chances are your potential customers are not able to find you either.

Making Your Business Visible Online Organically With Search Engine Optimization (SEO) In Kansas City

There are many ways to get your business or organization to show up in search engine results but at Web Force KC we believe that your website and blog content is king.  We are constantly pouring keyword rich, relevant information about your business and what you do and sell so that (when indexed by the search engines) your business has informational and industry relevant muscle.  We use the term “muscle” at Web Force KC because we rely heavily upon constantly creating content that makes sense to both your potential customers as well as the search engines. When combined with traffic from visitor to your site, your business begins to gain momentum and can then begin to broaden your service area based on how the search engines perceive the relevance and prominence of your business.  A large part of determining this comes from the amount of industry relevant information you have available in either the pages of your website or the contents of your blog and social media.

Unfortunately, there is no way to build your online presence organically other than constantly creating content that is structured, industry relevant and consistently adding content which does take time and effort.  Web Force KC partners with business in Kansas City for search engine optimization services and web design to help drive traffic to business website so that business owners can grow their customer base.
